SPAFOA Holds 2013 Spring Members Meeting at Michigan State/FRIB
April 30, 2013
The Superconducting Particle Accelerator Forum of America (SPAFOA) held its 2013 Spring Members meeting at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) located at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan on April 3, 2013. The first of three planned SPAFOA meetings for this year, the event at FRIB drew 24 forum members from 14 of the member companies. Ed Bonnema, VP of Operations, attended representing Meyer Tool.
SPAFOA is a not-for-profit organization with the mission to promote the participation of U.S. industry in major federally funded particle accelerator projects, while assisting in development of the required expertise within industry to apply this technology to the commercial marketplace. The forum’s focus is on the development of the U.S. industrial base in the areas related to research, development, manufacturing, construction and operation of accelerators based on superconducting radio frequency (SCRF) technology.
The MSU website describes FRIB: “The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) will be a new national user facility for nuclear science, funded by the Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), Michigan State University (MSU), and the State of Michigan. Located on campus and operated by MSU, FRIB will provide intense beams of rare isotopes (that is, short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth). FRIB will enable scientists to make discoveries about the properties of these rare isotopes in order to better understand the physics of nuclei, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society.”
The membership was welcomed by Dr. Konrad Gelbke, FRIB Laboratory Director. Dr. Gelbke, updated membership on the progress at FRIB since our last meeting at the facility in October of 2011. FRIB is ready to commence construction of the buildings and physical infrastructure required to support the project. Start of this civil construction is presently on hold due to the Federal budget situation. Meanwhile engineering efforts in accelerator design and prototyping are continuing.
A comprehensive summary of FRIB accomplishments and present status is contained in the presentation given by Dr. Thomas Glasmacher, FRIB Project Manager.
SPAFOA plans to hold two more members meetings in 2013. The next meeting, sometime this summer, will be the annual Capitol Hill Briefing in Washington D.C.
