Fermilab is America's particle physics and accelerator laboratory.
Our vision is to solve the mysteries of matter, energy, space and time for the benefit of all. We strive to:
  • lead the world in neutrino science with particle accelerators
  • lead the nation in the development of particle colliders and their use for scientific discovery
  • advance particle physics through measurements of the cosmos
Our mission is to drive discovery by:
  • building and operating world-leading accelerator and detector facilities
  • performing pioneering research with national and global partners
  • developing new technologies for science that support U.S. industrial competitiveness

Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented scientists and engineers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity, from how to obtain affordable clean energy to protecting ourselves and our environment. Ever since we were born out of the University of Chicago’s work on the Manhattan Project in the 1940's, our goal has been to make an impact — from the atomic to the human to the global scale.

We pursue big, ambitious ideas that redefine what is possible. Our research pushes the boundaries of fundamental science, applied science, and engineering to solve complex challenges and develop useful technologies that can transform the marketplace and change the world.

Los Alamos scientists are answering basic questions about the way things work at the atomic level. This leads to advances in medicine, clean energy, computing, earth sciences, and materials that do special things like conduct electricity without resistance. We must understand the way atoms behave and function at temperatures hotter than the sun, at crushing pressures, or moving at one million miles per hour.
Our people are highly trained, creative, and innovative. They have one-of-a-kind facilities to accomplish work that very few people in the world can do. We have a vibrant student and postdoctoral program because they are the talent who will solve the problems our predecessors only dreamed of.
The answers to these problems apply not only to national security concerns but to the betterment of life for humankind.

The Lab's mission is to develop and apply science and technology to ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent; reduce global threats; and solve other emerging national security and energy challenges.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

ORNL’s diverse capabilities span a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace. ORNL supports DOE’s national missions of:
  • Scientific discovery—We assemble teams of experts from diverse backgrounds, equip them with powerful instruments and research facilities, and address compelling national problems;
  • Clean energy—We deliver energy technology solutions for energy-efficient buildings, transportation, and manufacturing, and we study biological, environmental, and climate systems in order to develop new biofuels and bioproducts and to explore the impacts of climate change;
  • Security—We develop and deploy “first-of-a-kind” science-based security technologies to make the world a safer place.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has a mission of strengthening the United States' security by developing and applying world-class science, technology and engineering that:
  • Enhances the nation's defense.
  • Reduces the global threat from terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
  • Responds with vision, quality, integrity and technical excellence to scientific issues of national importance.
As a national laboratory, Lawrence Livermore is driven by its missions, and its world-class capabilities in science, technology, and engineering (ST&E) are what enable the Laboratory to achieve those missions.
To allow our talented scientists and engineers to pursue their mission-relevant, award-winning work across all of its disciplines, LLNL invests strategically in its ST&E foundations. The Laboratory also leverages its capabilities through strategic partnerships.

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) is one of 17 national laboratories funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The lab also receives support from the City of Newport News and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The lab’s primary mission is to conduct basic research of the atom's nucleus using the lab’s unique particle accelerator, known as the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF). Jefferson Lab also conducts a variety of research using its Free-Electron Laser, which is based on the same electron-accelerating technology used in CEBAF.

In addition to its science mission, the lab provides programs designed to help educate the next generation in science and technology, and to engage the public.

In the world of science, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is synonymous with “excellence.” Thirteen Nobel prizes are associated with Berkeley Lab. Seventy Lab scientists are members of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), one of the highest honors for a scientist in the United States. Thirteen of our scientists have won the National Medal of Science, our nation’s highest award for lifetime achievement in fields of scientific research. Eighteen of our engineers have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, and three of our scientists have been elected into the Institute of Medicine. In addition, Berkeley Lab has trained thousands of university science and engineering students who are advancing technological innovations across the nation and around the world.

UT-Battelle, LLC, was established in 2000 as a private not-for-profit company for the sole purpose of managing and operating the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. Formed as a 50-50 limited liability partnership between the University of Tennessee and Battelle Memorial Institute, UT-Battelle is the legal entity responsible delivering the Department of Energy’s research mission at ORNL.

Both UT and Battelle are committed to serving the U.S. Department of Energy by enhancing ORNL's leadership in scientific research, laboratory operations and community service. As ORNL's largest research partner, the University of Tennessee strengthens the Laboratory’s partnerships among state and regional stakeholders. Battelle's founding purpose, “science in service to humanity,” expresses a special responsibility to the pursuit, and the benefits, of scientific discovery.
