SPAFOA Capitol Hill Briefing
August 21, 2009
Meyer Tool & Mfg., Inc. participated in the Superconducting Particle Accelerator Forum of America’s (SPAFOA) third annual Capitol Hill briefing on July 30, 2009. It is the SPAFOA’s mission to provide a partnership between its industry members and government funded superconducting radio frequency (SCRF) programs during their design, component prototyping, manufacturing, siting and installation. Meyer is proud to support the SPAFOA mission and welcomes the opportunity to participate in these briefings. This year’s message related to the importance of industrialization in the early stages of SCRF technology development within DOE Office of Science programs and the potential of how these efforts benefit industrial growth in other applications of this technology.
Eileen Cunningham, president of Meyer Tool & Mfg., Inc., along with six other industry representatives, attended the briefing where various speakers provided an update on SCRF funding and project progress. Among the distinguished speakers, Adam Rosenberg, Energy and Environment Committee Staff, discussed the funding process and the increasing level of appropriations when compared with recent years past. Mike Harrison, the International Linear Collider (ILC) Regional Director of the Americas provided an ILC status update including goals and timelines. Glen Crawford, Director of the HEP Research Division provided a DOE Program and budget overview. Bruce Strauss from the Department of Energy Office of High Energy Physics, felt that it had been a good year. He discussed the benefits of attending the Symposium on Accelerators for America’s Future scheduled for October 26, 2009, in Washington DC. Congressman Daniel Lipinski, Chairman, Research and Science Education Subcommittee, House Science and Technology Committee also addressed attendees. This was a particular highlight for Meyer as Congressman Lipinski is our representative from Illinois and a strong supporter of science and technology. The congressman sought out an individual meeting with Mrs. Cunningham who expressed appreciation and support for his endeavors.
Collaborative efforts between labs and industry in support of SCRF technology is ultimately a win-win for all. Each of the industry representatives present at the briefing was ready with a presentation in support of this philosophy. Meyer believes the success of this ongoing effort has great value to not only national laboratories and industry, but to our nation as a whole. For additional information, view the script of Eileen Cunningham’s presentation and the accompanying powerpoint slide show.
