Our Christmas Wish for You
December 19, 2013
It’s Meyer Tool’s 45th Christmas and my mom’s 85th. Because she is suffering from Alzheimer’s, Mom no longer knows what Christmas is, but she spent a lifetime living its message. Through her actions, she taught us that a life of love, goodness, support and joy has infinite value to those around her. Through the years, she’s been the calm in every storm, a loving mother, dear friend and a significant source of strength for my dad, exhibiting unending belief in his mission, allowing him to make it all happen for Meyer Tool throughout his life and beyond.
Think about it. My dad was around 40 when he came home from work one day and announced that he was laid off from Argonne National Lab. He was going to work at the new Meyer Tool full-time. He had 5 young children to support. So did our stay-at-home mom. Another wife may have been scared. Others may have wanted him to go find a more secure paycheck. But Mom supported him and his dream, the dream that ultimately became his life-long passion, his legacy. She believed in what she did not see.
In the Christmas season, this is an even more meaningful message. God strives so hard to help us believe in what we do not see, that He sent His only son to live among us. I admit I do not know a lot about faiths other than the Catholic one I was raised in, so I’m not really sure if there are groups who have initiated Christmas celebrations for reasons other than Jesus’ birth. But for me, all I’ve ever known is that Jesus is the reason for the season. He asks us to believe in what we have not seen, to live a life full of love, goodness, support and joy, all things that have infinite value to those around us, regardless of our faith beliefs.
We are lucky. Mom’s eyes still shine with love even though she may not know exactly who we are or what the season is any more. She continues to smile and laugh, living His message despite her personal struggle. I realize that this is a tremendous blessing for both her and all those who love her.
We at Meyer Tool pray that your God blesses you as well, especially in your personal struggles, whatever they may be. We wish you a very Merry Christmas, a safe and fun New Years, and some time to share with your friends and family so that you, too, can experience all the love, goodness, support and joy the season has to offer, that life has to offer! May you surround yourself with those who believe in you, and may you believe, even in things you have not yet seen. Just like my Mom.
Best wishes,
Eileen Cunningham,
