Meyer Tool Participates in the USA Science and Engineering Festival

May 29, 2014
PictureUSA Science &Engineering Festival
Meyer Tool & Mfg., Inc. enjoyed participating in the Cryogenic Society of America’s (CSA) booth at the 3rd USA Science and Engineering Festival, 2014 held in Washington, D.C. The free Expo was open to the public from 9am-6pm Friday, April 25th Saturday, April 26th. Hosting over 3000 booths and 200 speakers, the event mission is to re-invigorate the interest of our nation’s youth in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by producing and presenting the most compelling, exciting, educational and entertaining science festival in the United States. How impressive that so many diverse companies came together, sharing experts and hands-on demos, to promote the value of scientific careers and STEM education to our next generation!

The CSA booth was manned with representatives from Meyer Tool, CSA, NASA, and Cryofab talking to children and families about the important applications of cryogenics. Our hands-on demos, performed using liquid Nitrogen (LN2) to demonstrate the temperatures in cryogenic applications and the effects of temperatures on a gas and different materials, were a big hit! Popular demonstrations included:
  • Using a temperature sensor to measure the boiling point of LN2
  • Putting balloons into LN2 and watching them shrink due to decreased pressure inside the cold balloon, then watching them return to normal after being pulled back out
  • Freezing rubberbands, racquetballs, and “super” (or bouncy) balls to see the various effects
  • Displaying the Leidenfrost effect by pulling some LN2 on a table
  • Levitating a magnet using a superconductor cooled by LN2
  • And of course, freezing marshmallows with LN2

For a more advanced project, students were allowed to submit proposals for designing a capsule which would insulate a gold fish from the LN2 for ten minutes. One group was allowed to test their design (a racquetball container filled with water, wrapped in bubble wrap, and placed inside a cryogenic glove). A temperature sensor was used to ensure that the goldfish was remaining at a safe temperature during the experiment. The group was successful with only a 20°F decrease in temperature over the ten minute period.

The USA Science and Engineering Festival was a great opportunity to promote careers in math and science to children and families of all ages. Meyer Tool was very happy to be able to bring their expertise in manufacturing cryogenic, pressure, and vacuum vessels to the CSA booth this year. Meyer Tool looks forward to our next opportunity to help inspire students, contributing to our mission of having a positive impact on the world, this generation and beyond.
