Austin Polytechnical Academy–Advanced Manufacturing Training Program
December 19, 2012
Meyer Tool & Mfg., Inc. would like to congratulate Austin Polytechnical Academy and Meyer Tool intern Desiree Wordlaw for their accomplishments and recognition.
On Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2012, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the city’s $1.25 million investment in APA to create additional advanced manufacturing training programs. A Meyer Tool intern, Desiree Wordlaw, was one of the APA student representatives chosen to accompany Mayor Emanuel around the school and discuss with him the positive impact APA and this grant will have on the students and their futures.
The Austin Polytechnical Academy (APA) is a high school in Chicago’s west side Austin neighborhood that prepares students for successful careers in college as well as careers in engineering, technology, and manufacturing. It is exciting to have a high school program dedicated to building the workforce of the future by bridging the skill’s gap, or skilled worker shortage, that currently plagues manufacturing in America.
Meyer Tool isa proud sponsor of this program. Our participation includes providing shadow days and internships to students as well as presenting manufacturing options to classrooms at the school.
“This crucial funding will allow us to take a decisive step forward in establishing Chicago as a hub for advanced manufacturing and a national leader in this growing and crucial field, said Jorge Ramirez, president of the Chicago Federation of Labor and co-chair of the Chicago Manufacturing Renaissance Council. I believe that by training our young workers and helping them into these apprenticeship programs, we will establish a base of leadership that will help Chicago move forward for years to come.”
The training program will also provide choices to participating students. At APA, students gain work ready skills that prepare a student for immediate employment. Students are also prepared academically for successful entry to both 4-year and junior colleges and some students choose to do both, work and pursue their education simultaneously.
Meyer Tool is excited to see this growing support for manufacturing in America and we congratulate both Desiree and APA on achieving their goals!
